Special Presentation to Eva Braun (Item EVA 1-1)
|
DESCRIPTION: We will be real candid here. At least 98 percent of Eva Braun items on the market are bogus. Most of her things were retained by the family. A very few were released to special friends and have come to market thru the years. We have a German consignor who was fortunate to obtain a very special item from these close sources. We have no doubts about believing in this item given the quality of it and from whom it was given. Usually, you will see Eva Braun items made of cheap materials with her iconic “butterfly” “EB” slapped on to give it “legitimacy.” Our item is a compact set. Again, being a female, compact sets/lipstick holders and other cosmetic items are most used to create the fantasies. It is from whom the gift originates that makes the big difference as he is someone most people have never heard of, Count Ciano, the ill-fated son-in-law of Benito Mussolini. Galeazzo Ciano was an Italian statesman and aviator and a member of the Italian Grande Council, and Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1936 to 1943. Later, after falling from favor after voting to depose “Il Duce,” he fell into fascist hands and was executed in January 1944. Often a guest at the Berghof, he was ever the lady’s man. Not realizing Eva was Hitler’s paramour, he gave her gifts she graciously accepted, but disdained from his advances. This compact set is a most-expensive gift consisting of a whatnot case or for cigarettes (Eva did sneak a smoke now and then). The compact case has a mirror inside and some of the actual powder is still evident. The third piece is a lipstick holder, also with a tiny mirror inside the case. The mirror is on the back of the top cover and pops open when the lipstick holder is withdrawn from the case. All the cases have the signature of Count Ciano and “25 December (Weinachten) 1941.” The larger ones say, “DEM VEREHRTEN FRL. BRAUN DIE BESTEN WEIHNACHTSGRUSSE! VON DER HEILIGEN STADT ROM ERGEBENST IHR GRAF CIANO, 25 DEZ 1941.” This translates to: “TO THE HONORED FRAULEIN BRAUN. THE BEST CHRISTMAS GREETINGS FROM THE HOLY CITY OF ROME. PRESENTED BY YOUR COUNT CIANO, 25 DECEMBER 1941.” Ciano’s signature is also inscribed. Each piece has a genuine gold set of letters artfully structured and fitted with orange enamel spelling out the stylized “EB” for “Eva Braun,” and above the lid opener on each there is a solid-gold-applied configuration that resembles the miter of the Pope and this is fitted with three fine square-cut rubies. The motif of the Pontiff’s miter no doubt reflects Eva’s intense interest in things Catholic, reflecting her upbringing in Bavaria and the religious school she attended. Eva loved Italy and traveled there often. She was especially enamored with the Vatican and the hierarchy of the Holy See. The two larger cassettes are about ½ inch thick. The compact is a little thinner. The lipstick holder is about ¾ of an inch thick. The largest case is 3½ x 3 inches across the top. The powder compact is 2¾ x 2¾ inches. All pieces, with the exception of the lipstick holder, bear the “800” mark with crown and moon marks. Additionally, the largest one has the number “24” stamped within. The lipstick holder is 2½ inches long. All pieces are silver and the décor, genuine gold. Just the set itself is worth a great deal, again lending to its not being a forgery. Seldom do the forgers spend a great deal to execute the final product. But, it is the Count Ciano connection that gives this gift enormous weight. Usually, the forgers have it from the usual line of top Nazi officials. Just how many people have heard of Count Ciano? This is truly a genuine Eva Braun memento with no room for doubt. This is rare and refreshing!
