WWI Stalhelm in Camouflage (Item WWI 3-1)

DESCRIPTION:Here is a good, honest steel helmet of the WWI period of warfare. This is in the original camouflage mode and is in good condition, except no line and no chinstrap. It has the machine-gun lugs, but the back liner retainer is gone. OK. So it's missing a bit, but I know some of you collectors/dealers out there have parts. This would be one worth restoring because of the very nice original camouflage treatment.

PRICE:  SOLD

German Lamp in Bronze (extremely rare!) (Item WWI 3-3)

DESCRIPTION:Now let's speak of "unusual." Here is one of the greatest Imperial art pieces that we have ever seen. It is a fine lamp all crafted in bronze that depicts two German landsers at R&R at the front. One in Pickelhaube (helmet) rests against the tree, which is the lamp stem, while smoking his pipe, while the other kneels while starting up early-morning breakfast. Under the lamp base is another light socket that when lit illuminates the wood fire that "Fritz" is using to heat his frying pan. It is so realistic that the light from the "fire" reflects boldly on the bottom of the pan. Talk about art copying life! In the background is a pitched tent. The roots and bark of the tree are done to spectacular lifelike detail. Although unsigned, the work is similar to Karl Kauba, born in Vienna in 1865; died there in 1922. He signed his German subject works "Karl" and when he sculpted cowboys or American Indians he signed "Carl." However, not all of his art pieces are signed. He, like Adolf Hitler, was inspired by the pot-burner stories of Karl May and his old shatterhand legends and he also worked form photographs of the American West. This may very well be a Kauba creation, but regardless, it is definitely an unusual and elegant object d'art of significant importance. It measures 20 inches high , but the tree, if it did not bend at the top would be possibly 25 inches to its branch tips. The base is about 9 ½ inches in diameter. The standing soldier is about 4 ½ inches high. The lamp shade is a beautiful translucent, tulip shape that gives morning time glamour to the subject below. This is a wonderful art sculpture and a great centerpiece for a German military collection. The collector of bronze art pieces would be proud to add this wonderful vision of military life at the front to his or her collection.

Huge Book Die Grosse Zeit (Item WWI 3-5)

DESCRIPTION:The Great Time, this big volume is 13 x 10 inches and almost 2 inches thick. It is the second volume only of a set. Unfortunately the first volume is missing and if it is anything like this one it must have been a dandy because this one is a winner! It consists of 648 pages with great black-and-white pictures, but it is the full-page color illustrations that are so very impressive. Some people who would buy this book would remove these color pages and frame them, thereby getting much, much, more money out of them than the book will ever bring, but that's not me. I'll leave this archival treasure just as it is and take far less for it, but I'm that much a preservation nut, I guess. Anyway, it is a really wonderful and deserves to be preserved in my opinion so we need you to purchase it and enjoy it as we did. It was put together in Berlin in 1920 as a remembrance of the greater incidents and deeds of valor in what otherwise was a horrible, bloody war followed by another five times as horrible.

Veteran’s Banner, 1909 (Item WWI 3-6)

DESCRIPTION:This is one of the magnificent banners or veteran’s standards that were proudly carried by former soldiers in parades, celebrations, and hung in the Kyfhauser and Kriegerbund halls throughout the Imperial and National Socialist times. Every small village and hamlet had one, it seems, and because of their gorgeous workmanship they were grabbed by marauding looters at the war’s end. The most sought-after are the ones that (like this one) embody the Deutsches Hoheitabzeichen, Imperial eagle, and “Germania.” the spirit of German pride and honor. The veteran’s group was from “Selau. Borau-Gleben??? Possibly a borough of less than 100 people, but still proud of its veterans enough to purchase a first-quality banner like this. The other side with Germania shows that this veteran’s organization was formed in 1888, probably with ex-soldiers from the Franco-Prussian War. The legend reads “With God for King and Fatherland,” then, “Emperor and Homeland.” The detailing in embroidered décor is (fantastic). Look at some of the close-ups of Germania’s gown, for instance. This was a major project-well done! Historically very important. It measures 54 ½ x 45 inches. Condition is extremely fine with very slight fraying at the top-right corner on the Germania side and one hardly-perceivable hole in the white-satin finish toward center. We have seen possibly 75 to 100 of these in many years, both in collections in Germany and here, but have never seen one in better shape. An extraordinary piece.

PRICE: $3,500.00
