Refurbished Original Helmets

Page 1

The helmets under this heading are all 100-percent original helmet shells carefully chosen and then very professionally refurbished by a gentleman whom I would refer to as a Stalhelm-artist extraordinaire! This man has studied the German helmet for many years and what was first a private undertaking and hobby has become not only an art, but a business, as well. Knowing that, original Third Reich and Wehrmacht helmets have reached financial proportions that the average WWII buff cannot often afford. This gentleman decided to pursue another avenue. He knew we basically love the Stalhelm and that basic love is first and foremost formed around its distinctive style Then where the $$$ come in is the finish, right? Well, our helmet-master has gone to great lengths to solve the financial dilemma for us. I mentioned already he buys all the original German helmet shells that he can get a hold of and then fastidiously repaints them in the exact colors that the various military units would have worn. He is super careful about this. They must be, and will be, exact! He then replaces the liner and chinstrap with new leather parts that are absolutely faithful reproductions of the original. He then ages the fittings. The decals that are used on most of the helmets are also carefully selected and are perfect. The end product looks just as good as the originals that would cost the collector or reenactor 5 to 10 times as much and everyone of these helmets turns out to be an item that even advanced collectors would be very proud to display. We also are extremely proud to offer these helmets that can be said to be works of art. Prices vary because of scarcity of particular shell or extra piece such as helmet covers.

Tropical Camo M-40 Army Helmet (Item HELM 1-17)

DESCRIPTION:This is a particular beauty; the artist knocked himself out on this one. It’s in tropical or Africa Corps coloration in the rough texture, newly painted with new decal; strap and liner all placed on an original helmet shell. So as we have ventured to say before, it is an original German helmet; it’s, however, been to the beauty shop. It’s fairly large size (58). Back flap is marked ‘QV1.’ The name ‘Bergmann’ is painted in the rim.

German Army Helmet Model Mod M-35 (double decal; original liner) (Item HELM 1-18)

DESCRIPTION:Here is a smooth-finish, refurbished helmet of original shell in size ‘57’ with the lid edge stamping ‘R,’ side stamping ‘ET 64.’ It’s a nice gray–green finish executed by one of the leading artists in this restoration craft. Remember, this I not a reproduction helmet; it is a 100-percent original, but with new strap, decals, and newly painted. This helmet is unusual among all the others because it has the original liner, so it costs a bit more.

Remember, this is a 100-percent original helmet shell not a reproduction. German Army (Das Heers M-42 Refurbished Helmet) (Item HELM 1-21)

DESCRIPTION:Here is a very nice-sized 56 army, model-42 with new liner, strap, decal, and nicely painted in the rough gray-green texture. The rough finish is true to historic form and to reach the authentic effect is the specialty of our restoration expert. Remember, this is not a reproduction; it’s a 100-percent original helmet shell thus we say ‘90 percent of the item is original.’ The shell’s back marking is ‘2430’ and the side stamping is ‘EF-64.” It’s a nice, clean example: great for display or reenactment.

German Army Helmet Model Mod M-35 (double decal; original liner) (Item HELM 1-22)

DESCRIPTION:This one is one of the best we have offered. First of all, it is a very large size as these original helmets go (size 58). This is most unusual. It has all the original marking at the inside (side) and back, newly marked strap with company markings, and the proper battle-worn decal. All in all, this is really a prima example.

Waffen-SS Refurbished Helmet (double decal) (Item HELM 1-23)

DESCRIPTION:Here is one of the prettier of the refurbished-helmet series. This is an original helmet shell (not a reproduction!). It’s reprinted and re-decaled with a new liner and strap. It looks like it just came off the assembly line. It’s the ‘E 200’ issue with the ‘NS 66’ side stamp. It’s the rolled edge ‘M-35-40’ style with both decals. It has the early war-dress finish and it is in a size 58 (large). You would pay $5,000 for an original that looks like this. I would say this one is a bargain and a great fill-in for the collector who works on a bit of a tight budget.

Waffen-SS Helmet (90-percent original) (Item HELM 1-24)

DESCRIPTION:Here is a real find. This helmet is refurbished only with the addition of an SS decal. Everything else is 100-percent original—paint, liner, strap. The former owner’s name, ‘Eichinger’ is painted inside the rim at the back. The size is about ’58.’ Please take note once again that what we have here is an original helmet with the addition of the SS decal only. This was model ’38-40;’ with rolled edges. It’s just as nice as an original that recently sold for $2,850, but this one is offered for a bargain price.

It is repainted to the original color with new decal, liner, and strap. This is a very fine specimen and would grace any fine WWII collection.

German Army, Single-decal M-43 Helmet (Item HELM 1-26)

DESCRIPTION:Here is a size ‘59’ ‘M-43’ helmet. This again is a 100-percent real German WWII helmet completely and expertly refurbished with new liner, strap, decal, and repainted to resemble the actual original color. It still has the back of shell marking (‘NS 64 250’). The decal is the best type out there. The chinstrap is marked with stamped numbers and letter ‘RB Nr 0/0390/0204.’ This is a beautiful example. The original shells are getting very scarce and we don’t know how much longer we can offer these magnificent Stalhelme.

Snow Camouflage Eastern Front Helmet ‘M-35/40’ Style (Item HELM 1-27)

DESCRIPTION:This is a 100-percent original helmet shell that has been repainted in the winter snow camouflage. The German soldiers were proud of the Deutsches Adler, or German national eagle, so usually when camouflaging their helmets they would paint around the decal as you can see in one of our illustrations that accompany this article. The helmet is in a size ‘56’ and has new decal, chinstrap, and liner. It’s the early ‘M-35/40’ manufacture with the rolled edges. The numbers ‘1165’ are clearly seen at the back flange. The artist has knocked himself out on this one and it is a great-looking Stalhelm.

Luftwaffe Single-decal Helmet; Camouflaged for Field Division (Item HELM 1-28)

DESCRIPTION:This again is a 100-percent original helmet shell that has been artistically and professionally overpainted and refurbished with new liner, chinstrap, and Luftwaffe decal. The helmet is an ‘M35-40’ model with the rolled edges. This one is extremely convincing looking (looks absolutely authentic). The size ’59’ with company marks on chinstrap from Vögel in Cottbus. The helmet stampings at the rear have been obliterated with the paint, but a number ‘13’ still stands out. Why do I like this one best out of all we have offered? Because it’s pretty! (a work of art). The elite Hermann Göring Division that consisted of ground combat troops would often wear such a helmet. This is a “great one!”

Mod ‘M-42’ Single-decal German Army (das Heers) Helmet (Item HELM 1-29)

DESCRIPTION:Here is a nice, minty-condition army helmet in the straight-edged, ‘M-42’ style. This is what a newly recruited German soldier would be issued in 1942-1944 as he joined his Wehrmacht brothers in the war against Bolshevism, and this would be the condition it would be in. The size is most likely about a ’35.’ Again, this is a refurbished original helmet shell, not a reproduction by any means. It has a new replaced liner, chinstrap, decal, and is completely repainted to look like the authentic finish. If you would like a beautiful example of the world’s most beautiful helmet, here it is!

Waffen-SS M-43 Combat Helmet (Item HELM 1-31)

DESCRIPTION:This helmet is in the cammo colors running from leaf green to mud reddish brown. It is a single-SS decal type. The numbers and letters at the back are there, but covered pretty much by the paint. The fine, new liner strap is numbered. The new decal was replaced and an excellent paint job was performed by our expert. It looks exactly like an original that might be found in a museum. The size is the German 59. This is an exceptional one; these things are art masterpieces.

SS Conversion (Austria) (Item HELM 1-32)

DESCRIPTION:This is another original helmet shell, but this one has the original liner and strap (what’s left of it). Actually, all that is replaced are the decals. It looks like a model 16 but actually it is manufactured in the early 1930s for the Austrian police and border guards. In the era of 1937, 1938, and 1939, the police in many districts went into the SS in preparation for the coming Anschluss, so we have seen helmets in museum displays both in Germany and Austria that were identical to this one with SS decals. The helmet has the two side vent holes—typical of special police helmets. The liner is there, but rough, and is in the style of the WWI one with padding inserts. A bit of the chinstrap is there also, but broken off on both sides. This is a real beauty for a display of early SS-style helmets. The size is quite large. It’s all original paint.

M-19 Allgemeine Transitional Helmet (Item HELM 1-33)

DESCRIPTION:This is a beauty! In my opinion this is the best we have ever seen produced by the skilled hand of our helmet artist. This is a Mod 18 transitional. In other words a conversion of a WWI-style combat shell to the needs of the rapidly expanding SS organization. There were several companies that bought up thousands of the now-discarded WWI shells and made the changeover of liner style, added decals, and black paint was applied to otherwise field-gray helmets. This example is 100 percent original helmet shell (Mod 18). It’s the type used by the SS VT and remarkably our amazing artist has even added a commercial head stamp inside the top inside portion of this masterpiece. The stamp is marked “Abgenommen (TV) 1938” and then the words that work out to “suppliers for the army and navy.” The size is stamped in the liner as ‘58.’ This is an exciting and great-looking piece considering that a “real” one intact would be easily a $10,000 item. This look alike is quite reasonably priced. Remember, it is an original shell that has been to the beautician!

Allgemeine-SS, Mod 16 Transition Helmet (refurbished) (Item HELM 1-34)

DESCRIPTION:Here is a real work of art: a beautiful Allgemeine-SS Mod 16 helmet as worn by the early Leibstandarte and Totenkopf legions. See the other helmet at Item HELM 1-33 for further description. See also the book SS Helmets: the History, Use and Decoration of the Helmets of the Black Corps by Michael D. Beaver with Kelly Hicks. This is the ultimate book on the subject—without equal. The helmet has been painted and relined with new chinstrap in detail. This one also has a head stamp like the others from 1938. This also has a company code on the chinstrap plus an SS acceptance stamp. The other did not have the stamp. So, here is a masterpiece helmet of the elite of the elite exactly like one of the originals, but for far less a price.

Waffen- Mod EF66 M-42 Refurbished Helmet (Item HELM 1-35)

DESCRIPTION:Here is the classic M-42 Waffen- standard issue single-decal helmet with the first-pattern runes. It’s completely refurbished with liner, decal, paint, and chinstrap over a 100-percent-original shell. This is a real helmet (field gray in color) with an improvement that is the work of a true, skilled artist. The chinstrap is lightly stamped with the company name. The size is fairly big; perhaps a ’60.’ The back of the shell is marked ‘QVL 64’ and this is the Sachische Emailles U. Stanzbewerke. The is a really great representative SS helmet for the enthusiast who would not want to, or cannot, pay $3,000 for a helmet, and that is about the current market price of the originals today.

Refurbished SS Helmet, Double-Decal, Dress-Parade Style (Item HELM 1-37)

Refurbished German Army Helmet M-35, Norway Issue with ORIGINAL Liner and Chinstrap (Double Decal) (Item HELM 1-39)

DESCRIPTION:This is a real find. This is an original German helmet with original liner and chinstrap. It has been repainted and re-decaled, but otherwise, what you see here is virtually a real German helmet. We have been offered twice over $150 for the liner and chinstrap. These pieces are naturally in need of some oil and polish. They are dried out to some extent after 60-odd years. It has the original paint inside that was the color used in the campaign in Norway, but the outside is finished in the gray-green color for dress-parade use. The decals are not quite as nice as the others above, but are quite acceptable. Here is pretty much the genuine article for the most part. This is a one-time offering that cannot in all probability be repeated.
