Life Magazine, March 28, 1938 (Item WEHR 22-1)

DESCRIPTION: This is the issue everyone is looking for. This is the one with the “great cover” with the German Army bugler and inside there are pictorial articles such as one on Horst Wessel and one on Adolf Hitler and NS Germany that is 15 pages long. Life considering its editors are naturally biased against all this, but not nearly as vehement as it was, later, in the 1940s. There is an eight-page section about the war in Spain to include a two-page spread on the ‘heroes’ of the communist Abraham Lincoln Brigade, the motley crew that went over there to assist the other red brigades fighting against the Christians and European people of the west. This issue is the hardest to find and collectors are continually searching for it in worldwide bookshops. This is in 99 percent great condition. Only the spine shows any wear at all and this is minute with no breaks or loosening. The price has increased, however, now in 70 years.

PRICE: $150.00; you probably won't find another

Anti-Communist Poster (Russia) (Item WEHR 22-3)

DESCRIPTION: This has to be an ultimate rarity, indeed. It’s a large 32-x-25-inch placard on heavy poster stock depicting the progression of the Soviet soldier as he goes forth. The translation of the words in Russian is as follows: “Red Army soldier, you go forth to give freedom to the oppressed people of the world?” Then below that: “…but first, you should make yourself free!” The poster’s message is clear, whether we agree or not. This is the type of posting that was done in many small villages by anti-Russian white forces, Cossacks, etc. Naturally, practically none survived. We bought this from a Russian in Germany on our last trip.

Rare Desk Ornament from Rosenthal (Item WEHR 22-4; WWI 8-11; VETS 1-17)

DESCRIPTION: Here in mint condition is a beautiful porcelain Stahlhelm, or German helmet, which balances on a wreath of oak leaves upon which is a Teutonic sword. The helmet is the WWI style with M.G.-Lugs. The entire piece is depicted upon a white plinth. The helmet and appurtenances are in striking silver color (a Rosenthal specialty). The familiar Rosenthal trademark is clear on the bottom portion. The base measures 5 1/8 x 3 1/2 inches. The piece is about 3 1/2 inches high. This is an absolute beautiful porcelain sculpture reminiscent of the “Great War.” This was the type of item presented to soldiers who now retired were intensely proud of their service to the Deutsche Vaterland.

5. Gebirgs Division Fob (Item WEHR 22-7)

DESCRIPTION: The 5th Mountain Troop Division was known as Hitler’s mountain warfare specialists or Spearhead #17. This was a crack, elite unit of the Wehrmacht with many holders of the Knight’s Cross among its members. They were formed in the autumn of 1940 and served bravely and nobly in Greece, especially Crete, then to the eastern front serving at Leningrad in the Volkhov region. After nearly a year of hard fighting in the eastern front the division was moved to Italy and in December of 1943 the 5th arrived on the Gustav line near Cassino. Late in the war the division fought in the mountain region between France and Italy and then finally surrendered to the Americans near Turin in May 1945. What we have here is an edelweiss fob with the symbol of the 5th G.B., the mountain goat, on its front along with the words “5. Gebirgs Division.” On the back (incredibly) are the words “Ski Wettkämpfe März 1945 Westalpen Front.” Here in the midst of the war’s most terrible year these stalwart fighters took the time to have a ski competition; talk about professionalism! This fob was for a watch or possibly just a dangle to attach proudly to the uniform. These fobs have been encountered in both bronze and silver. What we have at this time is the silver version. The purchase order for the fobs in silver came directly from the 5th. Gebirgsjäger command, but because of that late date and the steadily worsening of the war situation at that time, they were never delivered, and any that were ever found were in the bronze material. This certainly is a great-looking, WW II badge from an elite fighting unit. It’s very nice! Therefore, the one we have in silver can be considered extremely rare!

Book Rommel (Item WEHR 22-8)

DESCRIPTION: This is a special-edition book that chronicles the life and death that history calls the greatest military commander of all time. It has a linen cover with gold-embossed marshal batons surmounted with a Reich eagle (without swastika) and although there is no date printed inside we assume this might have been published in the 1950s. It comprises 100 pages with great black-and-white pictures. The first part of the book is very interesting because is shows pictures of Rommel’s decorations such as the Pour le Mérite, his Knight’s Cross with oak leaves, swords, and diamonds. His marshal’s batons (dress and interim), his officer cap, the award cassettes, and a great picture of the Führer presenting him the Knight’s Cross with appurtenances. Some of the pictures have not been seen in other publications. It measures 8 1/2 x 9 inches and is in excellent condition. This is a fine memorial to this the most-admired general of all time by friend and foe.

Book Mit Hitler in Polen, von Heinrich Hoffmann (Item WEHR 22-9)

DESCRIPTION: Here is one of the Hoffman soft-cover books on the war. This one, With Hitler in Poland, is well over 125 pages in great condition. Every true historian knows the righteousness of Germany’s invasion of Poland and the lies that have been put forth about that phase of the Second World War by the ultimate victors. Check the pictures in the middle of the book showing some of the pictures being shown to foreign journalists of the massacre of hundreds and hundreds of the German minority in Bromberg and dozens of other places throughout Poland. The legend or “Polish joke” about the Polish cavalry riding out against German tanks is also patiently false. Captain Harry von Johnston of the German cavalry led an attack by Germans on horseback with saber against the Poles with lances soundly defeating them. The Polish army was nonetheless a brave lot, but betrayed by the Brits and French. The book is in great shape throughout and it rare and important.

Book Für Hitler bis Narvik (Item WEHR 22-10)

DESCRIPTION: This is one of the great Heinrich Hoffmann books with soft cover. It was published in 1941 by the Hoffmann Verlag with a foreword by Generaloberst von Falkenhorst, the supreme commander of the forces in Norway. It is just a tremendous photographic chronicle of the Germans’ successful campaign against the British in Norway. There are great pictures of all the land and sea operations, the commanders, the sailors, mountain troops, enemy, paratroops, Luftwaffe encounters, and much more in this 96-page testimony to the brave Deutsche Wehrmacht. There are quite a few pictures of Adolf Hitler with his generals. The book measures 7 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches (the usual for Hoffmann publications). It’s in good shape except for a bit of stain on the front cover down at the right bottom.

POA Ring (Item WEHR 22-14; RUSO 4-7)

DESCRIPTION: Here is a finger ring of the army known as the Vlasov Army Russkaye osvoboditelnaya-Amiya Pycckar Ocebodumenbhar Apmur, abbreviated in Cyrillic as POA. This was the patriotic forces that were allied with NS Germany. The POA was organized by former red army General Andrey Vlasov, who tried to unite all Russians in opposing the regime of the monster dictator, Joseph Stalin. Amidst the volunteers were Soviet prisoners of war, eastern and Russian émigrés (some of whom were veterans of the anticommunist white army during the Russian Civil War). On 14 November 1944, it was officially renamed the Armed Forces of the Committee for the Liberation of the Russian Peoples. These men fought bravely alongside their western-European allies against the murderous hordes of reds. They were true Russian patriots and most of the Russian people agree with this assessment today. Included later in the POA was the dashing Cossack cavalry corps of General Helmuth von Pannwitz, the Cossacks of Ataman Domanov, and other white émigré formations such as the famed Russian Corps. It was a great mistake on the part of the Germans not to put more faith and support to these brave soldiers and officers. Things would have been different in the outcome of WWII. The ring is beautifully made and it is silver with the cross of Saint Andrew in blue enamel framed with red border in a shield shape. Above this also in enamel is the ‘POA,’ for Russian Army of Liberation. The sides of the ring bear the sunflower design beloved by Russians, Ukrainians, Georgians, etc. For details about our rings see ”About Our Rings and Silver Insignia.” These rings were made in Germany for the POA and there is the German ‘825’ silver designation stamped inside. This is a very nice historically important relic of the desperate and horrible war in the east.
