Commemorative Medal of 13 March 1938; Medallie zur Errinnerung an den 13 Marz 1938 (Item NSD 15-1; WEHR 26-15)

DESCRIPTION: This little aluminum spoon is actually a rarity among Andenken, or souvenirs, of the Reichsparteitag items that were sold at the souvenir stands that were to be found scattered about the grounds and also in the old city itself. For the collector of NS-period spoons this is a tiny, but tremendous find. We have never seen another anywhere in the hundreds of collections we have viewed. It is very petite--4 1/2 inches long. The widest part is an inch wide. Stamped on the back are the words “Aluminium-Germany” with the handcraft symbol of Nuremberg in the center of the words. This is cute, rare, and important to a prewar collection. With it was another Nuremburg souvenir spoon. This one with enameled Nuremburg city arms is included free along with the NS one.

PRICE: $125.00

Commemorative Medal of 1 October 1938; Medaille zur Erinnerung an den 1 Oktober 1938 (Item NSD 15-2; WEHR 26-16)

DESCRIPTION: The medal of remembrance of the “Entrance and Liberation of the Sudetenland” is Hitler’s greatest “bloodless conquest.” This virtually freed the ethnic population of almost 3 million souls from the domination of the Czechs and it was the subject of the famous meeting of Hitler and British Prime Minister Chamberlain along with the French Premier and Italy’s Benito Mussolini, who all tried to settle the Sudeten question. This is the famed “Munich Conference.” Three days after the successful annexation of Bohemia and Moravia and the seizure of Slovakia as a German satellite Hitler instituted the commemorative medal. It was designed by Prof. Richard Klein. The medal is in bronze. It was awarded to those persons who took part in the entry into the Sudetenland on May 1, 1939. Award of the medal was extended to those who participated in the creation of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. A total of 1,162,617 were presented. Artistically, the medal is just great with the German national leading the Sudeten German out of Czech bondage, while holding the swastika banner high. Below this is the national eagle. On the back is the date and the words: “Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Führer” with swastikas at every word ending. The words translate to: “One people, one national government, one leader.” This example is in really fine condition.

Book Deutschland Erwacht Werden, Kampf und Sieg der NSDAP (Item NSD 15-3)

DESCRIPTION: Germany Awake. The Beginning of the Struggle and Victory of the (NSDAP) National Socialist German Worker’s Party. This is an example of the Cigaretten Bilderdienst books of the Third Reich. These were issued as blank-paged albums as far as the pictures were concerned and when you bought a pack of Altoona cigarettes you found inside a coupon that you would then in turn send in to the company which issued the album and you would receive a packet of the pictures that you would then paste in to the album. When you had all the packets you would complete the book and the proud patriotic family would have a highly thought-of souvenir that chronicled the history of the Kampfzeit (struggle to power). This is considered the hornbook of the Nazi movement in the early 1930s. The book was issued with strictly black-and-white pictures and then later it was issued with wonderful Agfa color. This one that we offer is the color version. It has 150 pages with pictures ranging in size form 3 x 5s, 5 x 3s, 6 1/2 x 5s and several large, full-page pictures. This edition that we offer is missing four of the pictures. In the back of the book is a large fold-out picture that is quite large of the consecration of the standards at the Nuremberg Party Rally. It is an amazing photo collage of thousands and thousands of the uniformed ranks of the party functionaries, the SS, SA, and political-leader corps. It is quite torn, ripped, and coming apart, but could be restored at least to the point of looking presentable with some TLC. The picture is in a word astounding and the picture clarity is wonderful. The pictures inside are great; both the black and whites and the color. If you have never seen an edition of this you are in for a treat if you are the purchaser. Here before you is the whole saga of the Third Reich from its inception on through the putsch, the elections, the martyrs, the stalwarts of the SS and SA, the achievements of the NSDAP, the rallies, the leaders, etc. The book measures 9 1/2 x 12 inches with a brown linen cover that is a little distressed, but all there and holding well. This is not in excellent condition, but still rare and important to any archival collection. Millions were issued, but are extremely hard to find, today.

PRICE: $175.00; bargain

National Socialist Plaque (Item NSD 15-6)

DESCRIPTION: Here is an incredible NS plaque carved in the Black Forest style. The eagle is natural looking with the swastika above his head instead of in his claws. The legend above him is “Deutsche und Frei,” “Germany and Free.” This could be connected to any of the various lands and principalities that were liberated by the German Wehrmacht, but chiefly the Rhineland would be the candidate because the German army entered this area in defiance of the damnable Versailles Treaty. When the soldiers marched in under the swastika banner they were met by German priests conferring blessings on them, and women tossing flowers into their path. In Cologne, the people went wild with joy. Inside the Cologne cathedral Cardinal Schulte praised the German Führer Adolf Hitler for “sending back our noble army” while the great organ played “Nun danket alle Gott,” “Now all thank thee God.” It was an emotional time and it would be only natural that this plaque would have been carved in commemoration of this earth-shattering event. There is a name and the date of 1938 penciled on the back, but this could be the artist although it seems more likely that it is a note of ownership. The plaque is about 8 3/4 inches in diameter. The eagle stands out hovering on a rock formation above a pine forest. The eagle always is a symbol of freedom and triumph. This is a very special object d’art completely unique and exciting.

FrontkampferbundStandard or Veteran’s Flag (Item NSD 15-7; VETS 2-9; SA 12-6; )

DESCRIPTION: This fantastic flag was for the Frontkampferbund or Front Line Fighters and it was the elite group of the many paramilitary organizations that arose after the defeat of WWI in the Weimar Republic. This group was part of the Stahlhelm (steel helmets). The Stahlhelm was founded at the end of 1918 by Franz Seldte in the city of Magdeburg. Its journal, “Stalhelm,” was instrumental in spreading patriotism through the defeated, but still proud German Volk. The Stahlhelm was the largest paramilitary organization in Germany in the 1920s. In 1929 the Stalhelm joined the Volksentscheid Gegen den Young Plan to demonstrate against the Young plan. The Stalhelm joined the NSDAP and Altdeutscher Verband to form the Haazburger Front which was a united right-wing front against the Weimer Republic. In 1934 the Stahlhelm was renamed Nationalsozialistischer Deutscher Frontkampferbund (Federation of the National Socialist Frontline Fighters) and later integrated into the Sturmabteilung (SA). In postwar Germany the Bund der Frontsoldaten was re-created for the first time in Cologne. A year later in 1952 even before his release from allied captivity Field Marshal Albert Kesselring was elected federal leader of the extremely patriotic association a post he kept until his death in 1960. Even after the reunification old and young right-wing patriots called extremists by the leftist German government have kept ties to the Stalhelms’ ideology right up to the present time. At every meeting some of the old flags of the elite (FKB) are unfurled and presented. This particular flag was for the Ortsgruppe (local group) F.K.B. Freyung.v.W.. Freyung is a small town to the west of Munich in the area known as (Bresgau). It was an area known to have loyal sentiment to the NSDAP and this Frontsoldaten Gruppe was not an exception. During the period of the attempted communist revolution soldiers of this group were once again frontline fighters that came forward in the ranks of the Freikorps that letterally saved Germany from the red menace. They gave the Rote Front and the Spartacists hell delivered hot and furious. The Frontkampferbund gave its best in this terrible struggle and they were the ones in the forefront of it all. The flag we offer is in really good condition considering its age and how many parades, functions of the group that it saw from the 1920s into the 1930s these were drastic and multi-eventful years and this was the standard of a front-action group. The flag measures 45 x 45 inches square. It comes with its original pole top (pictured). The pole top shows both sides of the WWI Iron Cross and is also quite beautiful like the flag. The embroidery is purely wonderful. Yes, there is some fraying most probably from constant usage. But all in all it does not detract from what is a powerful virtual conveyance into the yesteryear of Germanic glory and patriotism. The former owner in Germany made a rod that has hooks with closure that exactly line up with the tiny rings at the edge of the standard. This is handy as with a simple flip around both sides can be easily viewed when the flag and the rod are hung up. So, gentlemen, here is a great offering both historically important, and beautiful.
