Book Deutsche Zeitenwende, The German Changing of Time; subtitle Vom Nationalismus, Zum Nationalsozialismus, From Nationalism, to National Socialism (Item NSD 3-12)

DESCRIPTION: Here is huge book measuring 9 ½ x 11 ¼ inches, but almost 2 inches thick with 431 pages chock full of important pictures and text chronicling German history from the Kaiserzeit to the Third Reich; many wonderful pictures, many full page and many in color. At least half of the book is devoted to the new Germany that was ushered in by Hitler and his followers in 1933. We couldn't start to describe the historical importance of this massive and wonderful volume. suffice it say that this really is the ultimate chronicle of what led up to and became the Third Reich. The pictures are absolutely phenomenal. This edition has the official statement by the Führer about the Röhm revolt and purge. This was not in the earlier edition, of course. Here is one of the most sought-after books of the Third Reich that will be considered almost priceless in years to come. The condition is great! You couldn't do better than acquiring this one if German history is your main interest.

Gift from the Gauleiter (Item NSD 3-15)

DESCRIPTION: This is an unusual little tea caddy in pewter, presented by Gauleiter Telshow of east Hannover to party member Leper on the occasion of his birthday in 1936. Telshow presents it in his capacity as Staatsrat. (city official and Gauleiter). The box or caddy, is quite old; probably 18th century. The Germans are avid collectors of pewter and this one, whose design is commensurate with the style of Frederick the Great’s time and flair, would definitely be a sought-after collectible. Herr Leper very probably was an advanced collector whom the Gauleiter sought to honor with such a prize. It is, however, open to speculation if a connoisseur of such fine 18th-century pieces would have truly appreciated the engraving put on in 1936 by the great man, or if he would have much more appreciated it left in original condition. There is also an engraved NSDAP eagle over the presentation words. We have seen similar items at Sans-Souci, Frederick’s retreat in Potsdam. Gauleiter Telshow was an early and close friend of the Führer and he was considered the most anti-Semitic of all the government officials. If this box is in fact 18th century it would be worth twice the price. It measures 4 ¼ inches high by 5 inches long from end to end (the long way). It measures 4 ¼ inches across the shorter span. The box is signed with a logo that looks like a flower pot with the initials “ARS” worked into the bottom stamping. It also has the name “Röders” in a stamped rectangular bar. Under this is another stamping that says “BLEIFREI), but this looks like it was stamped there much later. It is most difficult to get the correct lighting to enable us to get the picture of this magnificent hand-engraved N.S. political eagle; just right although to the eye of the beholder it is clear and great looking.

Political Armband
Political Armband
NSDAP Political Leader Armband (Item NSD 3-16)

DESCRIPTION: In the Hornbook on the insignia of N .S .Germany titled “Badges and Insignia of the Third Reich 1933-1945" Brian Lee Davis on pages 72-73 talks about political leader armbands. In figure 32 of the badge listings, he says the early versions of the armbands of the NSDAP political leaders used an unspecified system of armbands as a form of rank, these bands of braid varied in number of stripes and width and according to contemporary photographs evidence the more stripes or braids, the more senior the wearer's rank. In 1938-1939 the N.S. Party introduced new forms of uniform clothing and related insignia for the members of its political leadership, amongst these new items was a range of new style armbands which were worn on the left upper arm and where used to indicate the wearer's level of responsibility and the political district. In all there were 38 separate armbands for various levels of office within the four political groupings Orts, Kreis, Gau, and Reich. The early pre-1938 bands were much more plain and devoid of the gold and silver boullion brocade that later came about. There is quite a concise study of such armbands in the book “Cloth Insignia of the NSDAP and SA” by John R. Angolia, although he was able with amazing knowledge to identify the later bands he admits that he didn’t recognize some of the earlier Political leader bands shown on page 71 of the book. The armband at the bottom seems to have relationship with the band we offer here with its grey stripes along the edges but he says unidentified, so all we know at the moment for sure is that it is a Political Leader armband probably from the time of the Kampfzeit (Struggle for Power) -- if anyone has more information we would like to hear from you.

The band is in very nice condition and is constructed in fine linen material with the stripes along the edges in grey material, while the white field with swastika is finely embroidered and separately adhered to the red field. There is a stamp on the back with eagle and swastika and the words "Nationalsozialistche Deutsch Arbeiterpartei" (Nazi Party). Beyond this, we can only make out Ortsruppe, so we at least know that this was a leader at the Orts-level -- rare and in great condition.
